Reflexology
Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the ancient Eastern practice of stimulating certain regions on the feet, hands (and ears) associated with other organs within the body. There are several hypotheses on the mechanisms by which reflexology operates including theories based on the body's nervous system, the body's energy system and the endorphin system. Reflexology clients report a wide range of benefits to the body and mind and an overall sense of wellness.
What to Expect:
After the removal of shoes and socks and sanitation of the feet, the reflexologist will systematically apply pressure to areas of the feet (or occasionally hands) and work with those areas of tenderness which often ease upon application of gentle pressure. The therapist will give ongoing feedback to the client during the treatment while they enjoy the opportunity to relax and unwind.
Benefits:
Reflexology is a complementary therapy and as such if it is used to treat specific symptoms it should be done so in conjunction with conventional medical treatments. Reflexology does not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe[1] but is believed to be effective for a wide range of conditions and has the immediate effect of inducing a sense of balance, relaxation and wellbeing.
Equipment Required:
Reflexology is usually provided on a standard massage table or an otherwise suitable chair supplied by the therapist. The reflexologist may require a standard chair so the may be seated at the foot of the massage table.
Room Required:
The massage table is over 6 foot long and room is required for the therapist to sit at the foot of the table and manouevre around the table. A quiet and private room is recommended, however the treatment can be performed in more public areas as only the client's feet are exposed.
Recommended Treatment Lengths:
A minimum of 25 minutes is recommended for a 'taster' reflexology treatment although the standard session is around 60 minutes.
Event Suitability:
Reflexology can be taken as a 'one off' where client is introduced to the practice by means of a 'taster' treatment however for more effective results the reflexologist will usually recommend a course of treatments. Reflexology is therefore ideal as a regular employee wellness treatment and is also a popular choice for employee fun days and events.
